The TitanStudio Band

Dedicated to:

"Honest to Goodnes Rock and Roll"

The first TitanStudio Band jam took place in 1987 with Steve T., Dave F., Mike Z., Fred S., Ben G. and John S., meeting in the attic studio of "Sound Advice" located in the Lakeside Neighborhood of Duluth, Minnesota. Steve T. was one of the original members of. "The Titans." Steve has been a regular participant at the jams as have Mike, Dave, and John.

The TitanStudio Band now performs twice a year; adding the Summer Solstice Jam (SSJ) to the schedule in 1994. The Winter Jam, known as the TitanStudio Band Jam, (TSJ or TSBJ) is suppose to take place between Christmas and New Year's, as were the first two jams. In recent times, the Winter Jam has taken place in January of the following year. Hence, the 2000 TSB Jam actually took place in January of 2001. That's why the discrepancy in the actual year of the jam and the date of the jam.

The TitanStudio has produced some 15 TitanStudio Band albums containing the StudioBand's material. These were first produced on 90 minute tapes and have been converted to the CD format. Some material didn't make the cut on the conversion to CD, but most made it. The collection also includes three individual band members' complete works with the band. Mike Z, Dave F., and Rudy L. have all been featured on individualized albums. Mike Z's. album is in the concert format, complete with the TitanStudio Audience cheering Mike on. Those in attendance say it was quite a concert.

The TitanStudio Band had demonstrated its role as, "The Northland's Most Versatile Band" by incorporating various musical styles and incorporating various, non-Rock n Roll instruments. The mandolin is particularly noticeable on many recordings. One jam utilized the accordion, giving a Zydico flavor the music. A vibraphone can be heard on the 1999 TitanSummer Jam's Funky Mama. On the 1999 TitanStudio Band jam, Mick J. interjects some unusual sounds from the Korg M-1. An almost all acoustical rendition (guitar and mandolin) took place on, Guitar Boogie. Dave, backed up by John and Laura S. in Stir It Up, demonstrate Reggae done Titan style. Dave also swung out the, "Titans of Swing."

The jams for the most part are unrehearsed and free spirited. Seldom are songs ever "re-tracked" as that isn't the spirit of the jam and who wants to do all that work anyway? Dave usually provides some original words backed up by an impromptu rhythm. Such titles as "Jaeger Meister Blues," "High Bridge Blues," Jammin' in the Attic," "Y-2 K Bug" have evolved from those unstructured moments.

I'm often asked if I have any favorites from all the music that the band has produced. I like them all, maybe some better, but I like them all. One of the sweetest songs the band has recorded is, "Sleep Walk" on the 1999 TSB Jam with George M. on the pedal steel. Another "cool" song was Dave's rendition of, "Mean Mistreater." I'd say there are two songs that represent the spirit of the jams with a light hearted and fun ( backups were having fun) rendition of, "Long Tall Texan" and "Henrietta." Both of those songs were done by Billy T. with Mike and John doing the "backup."

One of the core groups that make up the TitanStudio band are Gutch T., Dick L., Mike Z. and John S. who make up the, "Grumpy Old Men." This band has done an album of Surf era songs. This is a fine collection of pre-Beatles music.

In 1991-2 the Winter Jams moved to Split Rock Studio. Tom B. engineered the recordings until the Winter Jam for 2000 when the activity moved to the TitanStudio. All of the mixing has been done at the TitanStudio since about 1992. The band's work was first CDized in 1999 and in 2000 the conversion of old tape recordings to CD was started. Most of the works were remixed for a compilation CD set which contains many of the band's finer works. (Finer for some reason or another; content or quality.)

The TitanStudio Band went on the web on July 19,1999 thanks to Linda H. our percussion section and motivator. Thanks Linda for all the help !
