Recreation area
Update for 2005

The Canosia Township Recreation Area had another good year in 2005. We saw a lot of usage throughout the year, primarily in the late spring, summer, and fall.

Baseball started in late spring with a number of games being played at the front field. There are approximately 250 children playing baseball, which keeps the fields busy. The back baseball field saw limited usage as the field was under repair for most of the year. The dugouts had new metal roofs installed along with new fascia boards. A lot of grass was growing in the infield, which was scraped clean with help from the county. We planned on removing the grass and replacing it with aglime. Upon further thought, the baseball participants decided it would be nice to have an all sod field. The infield was replaced with topsoil and sod was laid in the fall of the year. Depending on the amount of moisture that we receive this spring, we may be able to play on it this year. A lot of people volunteered numerous hours to rebuild this field. We’d like to thank them all for their time along with Dan Johnson of G&T Construction for the use of his skid steer and donated sand and topsoil, Larry Shelton for the use of his skid steer and donated topsoil, and St. Joseph Equipment for use of their skid steer. We couldn’t have gotten this project done without their help.

Upper division soccer started in late May and continued until July. The lower division then started and ran until early October. We have over 250 children in the upper division and approximately 300 children in the lower division. The soccer fields held up well throughout the year and do well when they are periodically fertilized.

The tennis courts saw a fair amount of activity during the year and held up well. The Arrowhead Tennis Center offered lessons throughout the summer on Tuesdays.
The basketball court saw a lot of activity as well. We had some new lines painted, with the help of students needing service hours. All the cracks were filled in 2004.

With the help of the Boy Scouts and community service hours the skating rink’s blacktop surface was painted white last fall with the hope that we will be able to maintain the ice for a longer period of time this spring. We owe a great deal of thanks to the Canosia Township Fire Department for providing the water for the skating rink. Hopefully, that will add to increased usage in the winter.

The pavilion was used extensively throughout the year. We need to thank Minnesota Power and Percy Johnson who added two outlets in the pavilion.

The concession stand was a source of frustration this year as it was broken into twice. The Canosia Town Board has approved the installation of an alarm system, which will be installed this spring. Unless they are reading this update, the future unauthorized entrants might be alarmingly surprised.

We’d like to thank all the people who have helped to maintain and improve the Canosia Township Recreation Area. If anyone has any comments or suggestions, please feel free to contact me at 729-7428.
