The construction on the Canosia Township Recreational Project has begun on two of the projects planned for this year. The pavilion and the new soccer field have seen some good progress over the last two months.

The pavilion has been built with the use of volunteers who devoted many hours of their time and talent. Initially, the footings needed to be poured. The bulk of this work was done through the help of Terry Carroll who works for Gordon C. Carroll & Sons and Iner Lockwood who works for Zervas Industrial. Jerry Carlson with Arrowhead Concrete donated the concrete while Danny Johnson with G & T Construction and Zervas Industrial donated the heavy equipment to dig the holes for the footings.

Next, the building needed to be built. Robert Waite of the STS Program along with his helpers built the pavilion solely with volunteer labor. They spent over 270 hours putting the building together with great workmanship. Proctor Builder's Supply gave us great prices on all the materials. All of these volunteers, along with many others I haven't named, deserve a special thank you from the community for the time and effort they devoted to improving our community.

The soccer field is being built by Danny Johnson of G & T Construction. He currently has the field leveled and ditched. Danny Johnson has been able to level the field by moving dirt from the small incline behind the baseball field. The ditch runs parallel to the fence of the baseball field and then turns east at the end of the field. Many hours have been donated by volunteers who have cut trees to help G & T Construction clear the land so more hours can be spent on the soccer field. Again, a thank you is in order for anyone who may have helped out on this project.

These two projects still need a lot of work to be done. We need bricks to be laid on the floor of the pavilion. Some of these bricks are being donated by the Care Group which was responsible for building the playground in 1997. The soccer field will also need sod laid. These will probably be done early next spring.

If anyone is interested in buying a brick to be permanently laid in the pavilion with either your family name or corporate name, please contact Patrice Mackereth at 729-5782.

Canosia Wildlife Area Entrance

Located in the north central part of Canosia Township it contains two pools of water held back by ditches and dams to make constant water levels for the enhancement of waterfowl. The many walking trails set in a natural environment provide an area set apart form the encroachment of residential zones.

Hunting, trapping, biking, cross country skiing and a snowmobile trail are all allowed by the Department of Natural Resources (DNR).

The United Northern Sportsman's Club, in the early 1970's, requested the St. Louis County Board to set aside this land. which was mostly tax forfeit swamp land, to be designated a natural area managed by the state. Our township receives funds in lieu of taxes for this land.

There are several access points located off the Lismore Road, LaVaque Road and Ugstad Road. Walking trails are designated by signs, as are parking and boat (canoe) launching sites.

There is private property adjacent to this area on the north, east and south sides that are signed to inform the public where the boundaries are.
