On August 20, 2002, representatives from the City of Hermantown and Townships of Rice Lake and Canosia proposed the following benefits to the Duluth Airport Authority for including them on the board of directors.

Benefits of Representation include:

Improved communications
Economic Development
Land Use Development and Un-Development
Infrastructure Improvements:

1. Transportation/Road
2. Sewer/Water
3. Public Services

Hermantown, Canosia and Rice Lake indicated to the Airport Authority that it is imperative to support the request for membership on the board because:

Airport Authority gains support by representing a “Collaborative Effort” to the City of Duluth

Master planning for region has emphasized regional support approach. Duluth Airport Authority can lead by example by expanding to include surrounding communities in their process

Duluth Airport Authority actions effect surrounding areas current representation and input.  By including Hermantown, Canosia and Rice Lake townships in the process, ownership becomes greater with the “by-in” of those surrounding communities. Outcomes of success can become greater as a result.

A consortium of communities provides additional support for grant/loan applications.

The collaborative effort of an expanded Airport Authority will build relationships and trust between the communities and throughout the area. It will continue to build credibility for the Airport authority.

By implementing this expanded Duluth Airport Authority, the Authority will lead by example with the regional approach of aviation.
