New 9-1-1 Signs
Do you have an emergency 9-1-1 sign displayed in front of
your home? In January 2003, the St. Louis County board approved an
amended ordinance to make rural 9-1-1 signs easier for emergency crews to
see. The new signs are larger, double sided, and posted perpendicular to
the road, rather than the smaller, one sided ones, which were posted
parallel to the road. If you have a serviceable old sign, you may still
use it, but are encouraged to purchase the new signs for safety’s sake.
Those who do not have a proper address sign, or whose sign is unreadable,
are required to install a new sign.
The new 6 inch by 14-20 inch signs are to be placed four
feet above the ground, with the address visible to traffic traveling in
both directions. If the primary structure is only approachable by water,
the sign must be placed parallel to shore and within 10 feet from the high
water mark. The new double sided 9-1-1 signs are available from St. Louis County for $25, or can be purchased from a private vendor if they meet size requirements. Call the St. Louis County Emergency Communications Department at 726-2920 for more information on purchasing signs.
