Introduction:
Recent years have been pretty sorry for the music industry. There is no great music coming out these days, and only minimal good music. It's hard to believe that only a few years ago, we were in the midst of one of the greatest music booms ever. But now the music industry has managed to sanitize most of what was good in "alternative" music and left us with nothing to listen to but mediocre sludge. Bring back the good old days! |

Bob Seger
Bob Seger is just the best. I have loved his songs for years.
It is some of the most personal, moving stuff that I have ever
heard. The music is good, but not exceptionally good. It's the
lyrics that captivate. I feel his growing pains, his loneliness,
and his desire to roam. Nobody has written so many songs that
speak to me like his do.

Nine Inch Nails
Just looking at them, you'd think that Nine Inch Nails would
be singing about devil worship or at least about heroin and
S&M. But Trent Reznor writes some of the most heart-wrenching
songs about love and loss that I've ever heard. It's very
dark, personal, and depressing music, and I love every bit of it.

Liz Phair
Liz Phair isn't one of the biggest names in music, but her
fans are very devoted. Her songs are very honest. She is someone
who definitely tells it like she sees it. She is seen by some
as being a pottymouth, but I don't see it that way. She uses
vulgar language freely, but it's not just for the sake of using
it. There's a message being conveyed. How else would you say
"Fuck and Run" without loosing the meaning?
It may be that her pottymouth has held her back. Many of her fans were upset when Alanis Morrisette garnered such a huge audience. They felt that Liz Phair's glory had been stolen by a cheap imitation. I happen to love Liz, but Alanis is also quite good, and personally I hope that there's room for two at the top.

U2
All right, just about everyone likes U2, so I won't waste a
lot of time on this one. Good music, good lyrics, good message,
perpetually cool. Nuff said.

Pearl Jam
I'm sorry to say it, but Pearl Jam has gotten pretty lame lately.
They're still OK, but they used to be great. Each album is a step
down from the level of the previous album. "Ten" was incredible,
"Vs." way really good, "Vitalogy" was OK, and "No Code" is rather
mediocre. Still, let's not dwell on the present, their past was
most excellent. In fact, "Black" is my favorite song in the
whole wide world. I play it endlessly, when I'm depressed.

Sheryl Crow
Sheryl Crow is a total babe. My first interest
in her was totally based on appearances. The music was OK,
but she was gorgeous. As time goes by, I find myself more and
more interested in the music. I can't say that any of it
strikes an emotional chord with me, but it's good, entertaining
stuff. Her second album is much better than the first.
Unfortunately, her gorgeous look has been replaced by a strung-out,
heroin-chic look. She's still attractive, but it just isn't
the same. Before she was on a completely different level.
Now, she's just another Hollywood bimbo. Bring back the old
Sheryl, please. I loved the Sheryl with the beautiful hair and
the most incredibly gorgeous lips the world has ever known.

Led Zeppelin
A lot of the groups listed here are included because of their
lyrics. Zeppelin may have had some good lyrics, but for the
most part that's not what has inspired me. It's the music.
Led Zeppelin was possibly the best musical group ever. They
were constantly innovative and exciting to listen to. Page
and Plant today have hints of the greatness that was Zeppelin,
but they still haven't been able to live up to the standards
of their original collaborations in the 70's.
